Emerge Devotion No. 3
A word that is not being used often these days and its meaning is even less understood or practiced.
Jesus says, “Go therefore and make disciples … ” (Matt 28:19-20) How does one actually make disciples and more importantly, how does one become a good disciple?
It’s not a coincidence that both “discipline” and “disciple” share the same root word. To be a disciple of Christ, we must be willing to discipline ourselves and to direct our energy towards spiritual training. Paul says it very well in (1 Cor 9:25-27 NIV) “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave … ”
We have to train ourselves in matters of godliness. It takes effort, sweat, focus and a heart that is hungry for Him. Just like a child learning to speak and to walk for the first time, you may fall down, you may see little progress at first; but the more you soak yourself in His presence, the more you spend time in His Word … what started out as a routine and discipline will eventually become a lifestyle of delight.
So youth of this generation, we’re cheering you on to be disciples of Jesus Christ!
